How to extract text from a PDF
Three steps, no accounts and no software to install. This free PDF to text converter works the same on a laptop, tablet or phone.
Add your PDF
Drag a PDF onto the box above, or click to browse. The tool reads its page count and size straight away — the file itself never leaves your device.
Extract the text
Choose all pages or just a range, decide whether you want page markers, and press Extract text. Lines are rebuilt in reading order, paragraphs kept apart, and words split by a hyphen across lines joined back together.
Edit, copy or download
The text lands in an editable box — fix anything, delete what you don't need — then copy it, or download it as a clean .txt file with the name you choose.
Why extract your text here?
Most online PDF converters upload your document to their servers, cap your free conversions, or hand back text you can't touch. This one doesn't — and won't.
Completely free & unlimited
Convert PDF to text as often as you like, with as many pages as you like. No daily caps, no "first three pages free", no pro version hiding the good settings.
Private — file never uploaded
The text is read on your own device with JavaScript. Contracts, coursework, statements and personal documents stay exactly where they belong: with you.
Editable before you download
The result isn't locked in a preview — it lands in a real text box with live character and word counts. Trim it, fix it, then copy or save exactly what's there.
No sign-up, ever
No email address, no account, no newsletter trap. Open the page, extract your text, download, done.
Common things people do with PDF text
- Reuse PDF content in Word — copy text from a PDF report, contract or ebook and paste it into a document you can actually edit, instead of retyping it.
- Pull quotes and data — grab the exact paragraph, figure or table row you need for an essay, article or presentation, word for word.
- Make PDFs searchable and copyable — a plain text version can be searched, indexed and quoted anywhere, even where the PDF itself won't cooperate.
- Feed text into other tools — summarizers, translators, word counters and AI assistants all want plain text; this is the fastest way to get it out of a PDF.
- Study and revision — turn lecture slides and textbook PDFs into notes you can highlight, annotate and quiz yourself from.
- Records and archives — invoices, statements and receipts become lightweight text files that stay readable on any device, forever.
Tips for cleaner extracted text
- Digital PDFs work best. A PDF exported from Word, a browser or a design tool has a real text layer and extracts beautifully. A scanned PDF is a photo of a page — it needs OCR first (see the FAQ).
- Use the page range on long reports. Extracting pages 2-5 of a 200-page report is faster, and the text box stays easy to edit.
- Turn page markers on for research. The "----- Page 2 -----" lines make citations and cross-checks painless — you always know which page a quote came from.
- Expect a simplified layout. Plain text has no columns or fonts, so multi-column pages come out as one reading stream. That's normal — and it's what makes the text paste cleanly everywhere.
- Edit before you save. The result box is fully editable — delete headers, page numbers or anything else you don't want in the final .txt file.
PDF to Text — frequently asked questions
Is this PDF to text converter really free?
Yes. Extract text from as many PDFs as you like, as often as you like — no sign-up, no page limits, no trial and no watermark. The tool is completely free.
Is my PDF uploaded to a server?
No. The text is extracted entirely in your browser using JavaScript. Your PDF never leaves your device, nothing is sent to or stored on a server, and closing the tab removes everything.
Why did my PDF return no text?
Almost always because the PDF is scanned: it is made of photographs of pages, not real text, so there is no text layer to extract. Reading scanned pages needs OCR (optical character recognition), which this tool does not do — instead it tells you plainly when it finds a scanned document, and even lists any individual pages that have no readable text, so you never stare at a silent blank result wondering what happened.
Does it keep the PDF's formatting?
No — and no plain-text tool honestly can. You get clean, readable plain text: lines in reading order, paragraphs kept apart, and words split across lines by a hyphen joined back together. Columns, fonts, sizes and images don't exist in a .txt file, so the layout is simplified — which is exactly why the result pastes neatly into Word, emails and other tools.
Can I extract text from only some pages?
Yes. Switch the page range from All pages to a range like 2-5 and only those pages are read — handy for pulling one chapter out of a long report without wading through the rest.
Can I convert PDF to text on my phone?
Yes. The extractor, the editable result box and the download all work on a phone or tablet, and the .txt file saves straight to your device, ready to share or open anywhere.
